Recently unveiled, the new Tesla Model X Crossover has become an overnight sensation. This new 3 row, 7 seat crossover has unusual falcon rear doors, allowing you to fit into even the tightest of parking spots that traditional doors and bigger cars could not. In addition, access to the rear seats is easier than ever before.

The Model X is set to be mainstreamed into the car buying community, and this car will provide a pancake style battery layout. However, unlike the Model S, this Model X brand will not have the 40 kilowatt hour pack. Instead, you will get a choice between a 60 or 80 kWh pack.

The Model X is considerably heavier than its predecessor the Model S, which means that you may experience more aerodynamic drag. More specifically, the Model X adds on an extra 15% to the weight, which was already 4700 pounds. Still, this car could potentially get from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds.

The Model X comes with a 17 inch touch screen, which is the size of a larger laptop. This makes all programming more visible, and it is something that most models have never even come near before. However, the falcon doors seem to be the main attraction. You simply can’t beat the ease of use, especially with the size of this car.

The final price on the Tesla Model X has not been announced just yet. However, most experts estimate that the price will be similar to that of the Model S, which is a comparable predecessor to the Tesla Model X. This sedan’s starting price will probably be around $50,000. However, you also get a $7500 federal tax credit because of the price and the weight. If you choose multiple upgrades though, the Model X could cost as much as $94,000 according to some reports. That is still fairly normal for many luxury crossovers and bigger vehicles.

If you stick with the basic package, which is only about $7500 with an added tax rebate, the price could be just low enough to cater to the common consumer. Mainstream buyers may actually be able to afford this luxury car, soothing some of the concerns we have traditionally had with electric cars.

Cars are scary inventions, and in the 90’s, we about peed when we heard about the BMW’s that took on a life of their own. When Toyotas started to do the same thing, mostly because of bad floor mats, we thought again, this is terrifying. As it turns out, a lot of the so called “faulty Toyota incidents” were actually faked by drivers who just wanted an excuse for their own aggressive driving. Maybe that’s why the government is stepping in.

Now, big brother is in your car. If you own an older car, chances are your mechanic won’t install this black box. On the other hand, if you like your cars new, you’re in trouble. Newer cars come equipped with a “black box” that records everything.

In a perfect world, Insurance companies would use this information to determine whether you are really 100% blame-free, and that’s it. Honestly, we don’t think that’s the whole story.

The Concern of Most Drivers

What if the cops could check your little black box and give you tickets for every little infraction? What if they could ticket you for going just 1 mile over the speed limit 8 months ago based on what the black box tells them? Obviously, cities and crooked cops could charge you a bundle, even if your car is just sitting innocently in your driveway. There’s something seriously wrong with that.

The government currently says that this will not happen, really? America also has laws in place that say that you have the right to a fair trial, they have to get a warrant to tap your phone, etc……unless someone says you’re a terrorist. What makes this any different? The biggest question many of us have is how will this impact our lives.

What the “Black Box” Measures

The black box describes many things to experienced readers in great detail. A black box can tell insurance companies these basic things:

How fast you were going when you crashed

Your maximum change of speed

How hard the accelerator was pressed at the time of the wreck

The ignition cycle at the time of the crash

If you were wearing your seat belt

If your air bag warning lamp was on

How many wrecks your car has been in

How Much Information Does the “Black Box” Provide?

According to the official description, the black box only provides statistics recorded right before the crash. We cannot say it enough. Call us cynics or maybe just skeptics, but we don’t think that’s completely true. We suspect that these boxes may record and save information for months at a time. The whole idea is sketchy at best.

If you were not doing anything wrong, clearly the black box should be on your side. The other driver could say they were only an innocent bystander who happened to fall victim to you. If that’s not true, then the black boxes in both your cars would give an unbiased account. Technology is not foolproof, but if there’s only a slight margin of error…..

Based on what we know, it seems like the only ones complaining are the people who are doing something wrong. This is awesome if you’re perfect 100% of the time. For the rest of us, all we can say is WATCH OUT! Big brother may be after you next.

If you owned an earlier lotus elise for example, you might find that you literally have millions of dollars worth of car sitting in your garage. Obviusly, if you buy now, you’re going to hvae to pay a pretty penny to get anything considered collectible. That’s why you have to be ahead of the grain. You have to know what cars are collectible and which ones aren’t. Here are a few options.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Currently selling for $54,095, this particular car is one of the few under $100,000 today that is likely to becoming collectible at some point in time. This car is considered to be relatively affordable, sporty, attractive, and chance are future people will see this car the same way.

Buick Regal GS

At just $32,535, the Buick Regal stands a fighting chance of giving you exactly the kind of car you want to drive and collect in the future. It has a classic look and a 6 speed manual transmission. It’s been a while since Buick has offered a car that looks this good.

Ford Mustang Boss 302

For years, Mustangs of all years have been considered Classic Muscle cars and collectibles. At just $48,100, this is one everybody can afford, and it seems to hve more modern ideas about how things run. The Mustang is one of the more affordable cars that still has that roar.

Fiat 500 Abarth

Few would see this one coming, but the Fiat 500 Abarth has really made a name for itself. This tiny car has real muscle, and it’s fun to drive. The best part is that a full day of professional driving classes is included with each purchase.

Volkswagon Golf R

This isn’t your ordinary Golf. We don’t really care much for that golf. However, this Volkswagon Golf isn’t even really your everyday GTI. This all wheel drive beast has 256 HP in every engine, and at $36,000, it’s not quite as cheap as you might imagine with less packaged versions.

Porsche 911

It’s not just the name tha attracts consumers and collectors to this one. In the future, we are sure that Porsche will continue to hold its own, and the Porsche 911 will continue to hold some serious value.

Nissan GT-R Black Edition

Breaking into games like Gran Turismo, the GT-R is part of a family of Nissans that has broken into the world of powerful sports cars. Wtih a 6 cylinder engine, the Black Edition has significantly improved the appearance of the wheels and overall appearance.

You won’t get the little emblem commonly associated with the Rolls Royce, but you can get the same basic amenities you pay an arm and a leg for with luxury cars.

Luxury Car: 2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – $2.25 Million

Affordable Alternative: Nissan GT-R – It’s true. The Nissan GT-R has become more competitive than you might think in the world of sports cars. It is not going to break speed barriers quite like the Bugatti, but that does not mean that you cannot get some serious power with a 545 HP engine. The best part, if you are not a driving professional, this car is actually more feasible to handle than its more expensive cousin.

Luxury Car: 2011 Aston Martin One-77- $1.87 Million

Affordable Alternative: 2012 Jaguar XK – So not everyone can afford this one at $84,500, but that’s still a hell of a lot better than the luxury equivalent. This car has a similar shape and layout, and the engine is powerful. There is a certain elegance to this model that is hard to find, and with 550 HP, no one is complaining for lack of power.

Luxury Car: McLaren MP4-12C – $229,000

2011 Lotus Evora – What’s not to love about the luxury car. The suicide batman doors alone are amazing, and unfortunately, the Lotus Evora does not have that feature. However, at $64,000, you could fulfill the dream of having a luxury car much more easily. It is amazing and explosively fast under the right circumstances. You get performance, style, and class, but you don’t have to feel like you are always in a race car.

2011 Ferrari 458 Italia- $225,325

Lotus Exige – Yes, the Lotus has made its way right in between expensive luxury cars and moderate bargain cars. At just $65,690, most people don’t just keep this amount of cash around. However, with 240 HP, this one is howling. You get an amazing ear to ear sports car that really gives you that amazing Spartan cabin that gets you going.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster – $196,100

2012 Mercedes Benz SLK Class – $54,800 – We’ll admit, we’re not completely in love with either of these cars. However, you stay in the same brand name. You get a fully designed Mercedes in both cases, but you pay a lot less for this particular model. You still get the luxurious options provided by Mercedes, and the drive is pretty smooth.

Catered toward somewhat of the “normal” crowd, the average car buyer by eliminating cars over $80,000 from the runnings. When ranking their top 10 cars of the year, the cars don’t actually have to be the newest, and Car & Driver attempts to get a wide range of options for drivers like you. So let’s take a look this year.

1.	2012 Audi A6/A7 3.0T Quattro
It’s easy to dismiss certain cars, especially when they haven’t changed in quite a few years, but why fix something that isn’t broken? 2012 marks yet another year when this particular Audi has made the grade with a supercharged 3.0 liter, V6 engine with 310 horsepower and an eight speed automatic.

2.	2012 Cadillac CTS-V
If you’re planning on some major heists, this is not the car for you. This is no getaway car or anything like that, and there are plenty of other more expensive options worth looking into. Sad, we know. However, this does not mean that this Cadillac isn’t appropriate for many other drivers. This comes with 19 inch chariot wheels, center exit tailpipes, and of course a couple, sedan, and wagon. This one definitely has plenty of seating.

3.	2012 Ford Mustang GT/Boss 302

Ford is definitely one of your more affordable option among these particular top cars, and the Boss 302 is not too different from its Stravadi counterpart. Nothing can really touch the Boss at $41,105 a pop, 7500 rpm, 444hp, 5.0 liter V8 engines, and 0 to 60 in 4 seconds flat. However, the 2012 mustang does a damn good job of trying.

4.	Honda Fit
Good cars come in all shapes and sizes, and Honda has stayed in good shape…for a long time. Remember that old Honda your frugal parents, or maybe your friends’ frugal parents drove into the ground, the Honda Fit maintains that legacy. The Honda wins best in class with passenger space, cargo space, a decent engine, and a good price.

5.	Porsche Boxster/Cayman
The Boxster is definitely one of Porsche’s better priced option. Why buy a Hyundai that has amenities when you can get a Porsche Boxster for the same price? Either of these models though have remained rather popular, and these both offer some pretty stylish and valuable options.

The Other 5

•	2012 BMW 3-Series M3
•	2012 Ford Focus
•	2012 Honda Accord
•	2012 Mazda Miata
•	2012 Volkswagon Golf/GTI

Frankly, if you really want to get your car into the movies, you need something more than the average car designer. If you’ve seen the cars in James Bond and other similar films, they can be hard to beat. Here are a few of the most attractive ones I’ve seen lately.

1.	Aston Martin DBS
I’m highly tempted to think that you really can’t go wrong with an Aston Martin. It’s not about the brand name….okay maybe it is, just a little. However, Aston Martins come with some serious specs, features, and looks. This particular model made its debut in the 2006 James Bond Casino Royale, and while you probably won’t have it in your garage any time soon….we still love it. At the very least, this car can literally make it up to 191mph. Keep in mind the cost though before you go looking: $275,000. That’s a house!

2.	Audi R8 GT
I’ve always been a fan of the Audi TT, which is supposed to be a “girl’s car.” However, the Audi R8 GT is extremely versatile and ready for either sex. This particular model is more than 5 years old and has a truly stunning design. You can distinguish this Audi from 3 blocks away, easily. Limited to just 333 total cars worldwide, the Audi R8 GT sells for $198,000 base.

3.	Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
First seen in 2005, this is like all of the popular kid types in your school all rolled into one. Okay, maybe that doesn’t sound appealing. Basically, the Veyron Supersport is sport, class, and innovation all rolled into one very nice package. With 268mph top speed, I would like a ride in one of these distinctive cars.

4.	Ferrari 458 Italia
Even if you’re not usually a Ferrari fan, this particular Ferrari has something to share. The successor to the 430, the 458 has winglets that reduce drag and a nearly flat underbelly. This car easily goes 124mph and can match a top speed of over 200mph. In fact, this Ferrari has an incredible 562 hp.

5.	Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe
This car is jaw dropping to say the least. The Phantom has always been something to be admired and something that most of us couldn’t afford for quite a few years to come. Made of polished steel, this Phantom comes with wool carpets, switchgears of brightly polished metal, and a ton of wood. For a base price of $445,000, you are literally paying what most people pay (sometimes less) for a house! However, for a big event, renting one of these is not a bad option.

It used to be that electric cars were something of the future, meant exclusively for the rich who could avoid other fuel alternatives such as water based fuel in cars such as BMW or other luxury brands. However, ever since the introduction of the Nissan leaf and other models like it, that kind of thinking has been challenged. True, the Nissan Leaf is considered to be extremely underpowered and maybe not what the serious speed racer would want, but just consider the savings.

You have to pay a little more in the beginning, as compared to other Nissans or similar vehicles that use fuel. You also have to charge the car, and one charge can only go so far, but considering the rising sales, obviously there are consumers who think that all the restrictions that come with an affordable electric car are worth it.

Despite slightly lower gas prices, especially in the winter season, many would like to be prepared. Just as the hybrids of the past have been extremely popular, consumers seem to at least like the Nissan Leaf. As of October 31, 2011, Nissan officially sold 8,048 Nissan Leafs to mostly enthusiastic owners. In fact, the Nissan Leaf seems to be the most commonly used cars for people who own them. This is not like the Smart Car that is used mostly for around town driving. People are using the Leaf for all of their daily tasks.

According to Brendan Jones, director of electric vehicle marketing and sales strategy at Nissan, it’s not all about the fuel savings. “They drive it primarily because it is fun to drive.” Of course, the practicality doesn’t hurt, but it’s nice to know that the leaf is not as uncomfortable as certain other small models such as the mini cooper.

Keep in mind, this car as a cold weather driving range of as little as 65 miles total, which can be a little bit worrisome if you have longer to go. However, the average Leaf driver drives only 35 miles a day. Obviously, the anxiety associated with being stranded when you can’t simply pull into or walk to a nearby gas station is a bit high. However, Jones states that most get used to the idea and learn to be prepared.

If you do get stranded, much like a natural gas vehicle, you do have to be towed. The good news is that for an extra $700, you get an optional fast-charging port, which has become extremely popular despite the still limited number of stations that offer this option.

So far, there are 562 orders for these fact acting chargers. The competition isn’t too stiff for the Leaf simply because it is the only economy car offering this option so far. However, we do expect more competition in the future.

You can get cars one year used, the price drops dramatically, and you still get a fairly new car. However, if you fit into one of the previously mentioned groups or you just really want a new car, you still have to be careful about what type of car you get. Here are a few that the experts recommend avoiding, at least for now.

1.	Jeep Liberty/Dodge Nitro
These cars are mechanically quite equivalent and may as well be the same car. The basic idea is that these are midsize traditional truck based SUV’s designed to be off road warriors, right? The problem is that these particular models are extremely underpowered if you want to go offroad, and talk about a rough ride during normal situations.

These provide only 4 speed automatic options with no real interior comfort, and these two brands are famous for mechanical problems anyway. Yes, just in case you were wondering, there are plenty of consumer complaints.

2.	Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon
We know, the American cars really are getting a bad rap, but what do you do. The reality is that these small pickups are again underpowered and oversold. Full size trucks may have worse gas mileage, but in other ways, you get more for your buck. You get a real truck!

This manual transmission car model is outdated and crude, and these cost way too much compared to other manual transmission trucks and cars. These models are considered to be marginally reliable, and all in all, these both receive poor rankings.

3.	Nissan Armada
Yes, this model is really a beast on the road. It’s unruly and a handful in normal driving conditions, and parking can really be a pain. Parallel parking is particularly bad. A real dinosaur in more ways than one, we have long since moved past models like this. You should expect better.

4.	GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado 2500
We group cars because the models and cars are that similar. These two trucks are described as full size, heavy duty trucks. However, to carry that much weight alone, you have to have a powerful engine. While this truck can tow a maximum of 17,500 pounds when properly equipped (key phrase there), but for everyday driving, not so great.

5.	Dodge Caliber
A small, crossover wagon, this appeals to some. It looks good with compact segments, and you think that it would be great with an automatic transmission. However, the Dodge Caliber is extremely underpowered and has a cheap interior. You are just not getting what you pay for.

6.	Nissan Titan
We’ll give Nissan enough credit to say that their cars always look good. However, looking good and being good are not quite the same thing. Frankly, the Nissan Titan in reality lags far behind the competition. However, if you want cash rebates and tax breaks that are given for trucks and SUV’s over a certain weight, over a certain price, etc., Nissan does provide that.

While most car companies have remained fairly competitive to stay in the game, Audi has now become the most second largest car manufacturer in the world. Aiming to replace BMW as the #1 manufacturer of luxury cars, Audi continues to set goals of selling 2 million cars worldwide ever year by 2020.

In October 2011 alone, BMW sold 107,789 cars, Mercedes sold only 103,378, and Audi sold a whopping 108,500. BMW’s sales from the October increased by 12.5%, Mercedes increased by a mere 2.9%, and Audi’s increased by 24%, creating hope for the future. However, that is only one month compared to a full year of sales.

It is quite clear that Audi is boasting impressive growth rates, creating increased demand in China, the US, and UK. However, China is currently the fastest growing industry in the world, increasing by 62% over the past year. Chinese BMW sales have increased by 43% while Chinese Mercedes Benz have only grown by 23% in the past year. Regardless of the car manufacturer, all 3 have sale that have significantly grown within the past year.

Even though Mercedes has fallen to the third spot in line, Mr. Joachim Schmidt, head of sales at Mercedes Benz states, “We are still on track to sell more vehicles in the full year than ever before.”

What is behind the growth in both European made luxury cars and Audi in particular? Experts have not yet released any data on that. All we know is that China seems to really like Audi and all of its innovations or possibly Audi’s new car designs, and as an ever expanding country, the Chinese market is perhaps the most important market in the world and the on that any smart car manufacturer wants to cater to in the future.

While Audi TT’s have impressed before, there are many saying that the 2012 Audi TT may break new ground. This new model sits atop the traditional Audi TT’s, with key upgrades, a turbocharged 360 hp engine, five cylinders, a magnetic ride suspension, and various other hardware and software upgrades that you will not see in previous models, at least not on a standard basis.

Trim & Features

The one downside to the new Audi TT is that it only comes with manual options. So I hope you like and can operate a manual vehicle. It has 19 inch wheels, 255/35 summer compound tires, and a magnetic ride control suspension with normal and sport modes. It modifies the throttle response and exhaust note, provides ventilated disc brakes, and it has unique front and rear bumpers with a fixed rear wing spoiler.

Outside of that this new Audi TT looks and functions a lot like older models. It has rain sensing wipers, heated windshield nozzles, power heated side mirrors, and Xenon plus headlights for bad weather any time. It comes equipped with a Bose premium sound system, navigation, ambient cabin lighting, carbon fiber exterior mirrors, and buyers can choose certain option changes at no extra charge.

Under the Hood

The Audi TT’s engine is something to be rivaled. It comes with a turbocharged 2.5 liter 5 cylinder engine, and it provides maximum performance with forged six-bearing crankshafts, sodium cooled exhaust valves, etc. Basically, you get 360 hp, 5500 to 6700 rpm, and 342 pound-feet of torque spread between the 4 wheels of the Audi TT. Drivers can accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds, and it can drive a total of 174mph.

So far, the Audi TT seems to get an average of 18mpg city and 25mpg highway, which isn’t bad for a car with an engine like this.

Safety & Longevity

The Audi TT comes with a standard safety pack including dual front, dual side, and dual knee airbags, antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assistance, and stability and traction control with rain-sensing wipers. It provides rear park assist as an added benefit and adaptive headlights.

Audi TT’s are not said to be the most reliable cars in the long run, that looks a little gloomy. However, crash tests seem to be rather positive. The current warranty gives you 50,000 miles or 4 years of ownership.
